Residents participate in an owl’s rehabilitation

A representative from the South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls (SORCO) recently visited the Portage Keremeos centre with an injured Great Horned Owl. He explained the analogies between the birds’ rehabilitation and the Portage residents’ recovery, stating that the birds that reject treatment at SORCO often do not recuperate. A few weeks after the visit, a Portage staff member found an injured owl by the side of the road and he and the girls’ community brought it to SORCO. At the end of March, the SORCO representative brought the bird back to Portage, fully healed, and the community celebrated his successful recovery with a goodbye ceremony as they released him back into the wild.
