Overview

Portage Atlantic is a non-profit organization that was founded in New Brunswick in 1995.

The Portage Atlantic Board is chaired by Dr. Russell King, a family doctor in Fredericton and former Health Minister in the McKenna government. The Board is made up of dedicated volunteers who are involved in their communities ensuring proper governance of Portage activities in Atlantic Canada.

Portage, which was founded in Montréal in the early 1970s, was already operating residential treatment centres for adolescents in Elora, Ontario and lac Écho in Montreal and more recently in Keremeos, BC.

The task was not easy because social services and education were facing significant budget cuts across the country. However, these citizens quickly found allies, and were able to pursue their project successfully.

The Lions Clubs and other community groups also wanted to become involved in combating substance abuse. The project finally became a reality as a result of their advocacy and fundraising campaigns, coupled with a new partnership with the Government of New Brunswick, and particularly the Department of Health and the Department of Public Security. In 1995, a service centre opened its doors in Fredericton, followed the next year by a rehabilitation centre for adolescents and young adults at Cassidy Lake.

Over the past 13 years, more than 1,400 youths from New Brunswick and other Atlantic provinces have been treated at the 52-bed Cassidy Lake treatment centre.

Established on the site of a former summer youth camp, the buildings have been renovated over the years. As the need for the Portage residential services increased, a number of trailers were donated or bought to make up more space for dormitories and classrooms. To respond to these needs and provide permanent structures for Cassidy Lake residents and staff, the Portage Atlantic Board launched "the Making Miracles Happen" campaign in October 2006 and has successfully surpassed the campaign goal of $1.25 million.
