EVENTS AT PORTAGE ATLANTIC

“Stride for Success” charity relay a great success!

On Sunday July 11th, teams from Portage Atlantic, T4G and The Girls Bra Shop came together to take part in the “Stride for Success” charity relay, benefiting Portage Atlantic’s Recovery Trail project.

Cassidy Lake youth participants and volunteers had a great time, winning some fantastic prizes and impressing everyone with their amazing race times.  Their positive attitudes and willingness to support one another was an inspiration to all, as some of the youth tackled the challenging course several times to keep others company during their leg of the run.

Official Opening of the new treatment facility at Cassidy Lake

June 18th marked the completion of the Making Miracles Happen fundraising campaign, launched in October 2006 by Portage Atlantic. Thanks to contributions from supporters and from the New-Brunswick and Canadian governments, Portage Atlantic was able to build a new facility at Cassidy Lake to improve accommodations and work spaces.

Because of an increasing demand for Portage Atlantic’s drug rehabilitation services, there was a desperate need to move the classrooms, meeting rooms, and dormitories out of temporary quarters and into bigger, more suitable spaces.

Portage Atlantic inaugurated the new facility in the presence of New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, Portage Atlantic Chair, Russell H.T. King and fellow Board Members, and Portage staff, youth, graduates, and residents.

Modernisation of the facility at Cassidy Lake is a true miracle that could not have been realised without the collaboration of Portage Atlantic’s supporters.

The Portage Atlantic “Recovery Trail” Project in Partnership with the Future Focus Foundation

Portage Atlantic’s drug addiction rehabilitation treatment centre sits on 165 acres, mostly undeveloped, on the shores of Cassidy Lake.

The Recovery Trail Project involves extending and enhancing Cassidy Lake’s existing 3.8 km path, to include wheelchair accessibility and provide a safe and picturesque route for walking, running, biking and snowshoeing. The project will provide for the purchase of new recreational equipment to be used on the trail, including mountain bikes and snowshoes.

An enhanced outdoor recreation component at Cassidy Lake will help to strengthen the minds and bodies of our recovering youth while improving accessibility to the natural beauty of the Centre’s lakeside property.

Future Focus Foundation is the charitable organisation founded by technology company T4G Limited. They are raising money for the Portage Atlantic Recovery Trail Project by seeking relay teams from New Brunswick corporations to participate in the "Stride for Success" portion of the Run Through History-Celebration of Green Space endeavour at the Lily Lake Pavilion July 11, 2010.  All money raised from Future Focus' Stride for Success will go towards the Portage Atlantic Recovery Trail Project.

The Moncton firm of Architects Four Ltd has been overseeing the construction and John Flood and Sons (1961) Ltd of Saint-John are the construction managers. As of May 2009, the boy's dormitory and the girl's dormitory as well as the service building are fully operational. The main building which will include classrooms, meeting rooms, a staff board room, administration offices and a new kitchen and dinning room is now under contruction.

Portage's hopes and plans for the future go beyond the new campus style facility, hence; the Portage Atlantic Foundation raises funds for programs and services that not only improve and benefit the lives of these young people - it has a rippling effect. Families and communities also are affected by the positive outcomes of rehabilitation.
