Mother and Child Program

Portage offers a proven, accredited treatment program for substance abusing pregnant women and mothers accompanied by their young children.

This unique, innovative residential program, which is based on the therapeutic community approach, enables mothers and pregnant women to become involved in a personalized treatment process, supported by personnel who have with complementary areas of expertise.

Peer support groups, group therapy sessions, and practical experience in parenting enable the user to:

  • increase her self-knowledge;
  • build her self-confidence and dignity;
  • understand personal relations (parent-child and couple);
  • develop the competencies that are required in order to play an active role in her community.

Children receive support that is adapted to their age, and attend primary school.

Participating together in a variety of activities strengthens the bond between mother and children.

Who qualifies for this program?

This program is intended for:

  • substance abusing mothers accompanied by their children up to age six (6);
  • pregnant substance abusing women

School program (children)

  • Depending on their age, children go to La Ribambelle daycare on the premises or attend a primary school in the neighbourhood.

Characteristics

Length of the program
The residential program lasts approximately six (6) to eight (8) months.

Language and location
The program is offered in both languages in Montréal.

Cost
This program is free for the residents of Québec and their children.

Subsidies from the Québec government and funding from the Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon enable Portage to offer this program free of charge.

Admission
Admission to the program is voluntary.

In order to increase their chances of success, it is important for applicants to display a willingness to solve their personal problems. This motivation is assessed by Portage personnel during the pre-admission interview.

  • Aftercare
    This program provides support services for mothers to help guide them toward an independent life in society.
  • Family services
    Complete support for families and friends;
    Meetings with other family members during and after therapy in order to bring about understanding concerning addictions, and to support the efforts of users in their rehabilitation process.
